Tourist News: Regensburg in September

Regensburg's Herbdult and the Open Heritage Day

The Hightlights in September surely are the 'Herbstdult' and the 'Tag des offenen Denkmals. Regensburg’s Dult is a Bavarian festival with a long tradition. Discover this and other particularities by having a closer look at it’s Warendult. As usual two large festival tents invite you to enjoy traditional Bavarian drink and delicacies. Each year on the second Sunday in September, historical buildings and sites in Regensburg are opened to the public in special guided tours. Experience history with the 2008 theme: Uncovering the past.

And what's on?
Here are our Recommondations for your perfect stay in Regensburg:

 Music
Listen to baroque, romantic and contemporary organ music during the Internationale Orgelwoche (International Organ Week) on the 7th (5 p.m.), 10th (8 p.m.) and 14th of September in the Old Chapel. World famous organ players from Poland, Austria and Germany will then interpret challenging organ literature on the Pope Benedict Organ.
Beside the acoustic treat you get, the lustrous Rococo interior of the Basilica will add the finishing touch to this concert and will let you enjoy this synthesis of the arts with all your senses. More information at: www.papst-benedikt-orgel.de

Theater
The most famous collective work of Bert Brecht and Kurt Weill is without doubt The Three Penny Opera. The very funny plot is accompanied by exceptionally racy and indestructibly vibrant music tunes. A special version which tries to incorporate John Gays baroque original The Beggar’s Opera in the play will be performed until the 7th of September (except for Monday and Tuesday) on a daily basis, shows starting at 8 p.m. in the theater tent COMEDIA MUNDI at the Grieser Spitz location. More Information at: www.comoedia-mundi.de
The opening play of the Regensburg City Theater – Regensburg Stadtheater 2008/2009 season will also be the Three Penny Opera and will be performed on the 26th of September at 7:30 p.m. in the Velodrom Theater. Other performances are scheduled for the 27th and 28th of September at the same time.
The German opera par excellence and the most important musical opus in the history of music theatre during the German Romantics is Carl Maria von Webers -‘Freischütz’ – also known as ‘The Marksmen’.
It is staged for the 27th and 29th of September at 7:30 p.m. in the classical theatre building at the Bismarckplatz square. A silent protagonist in this opera will be the German forest. For more information go to: www.theaterregensburg.de

 Museums
We sure do not have to explain to you anymore that photography is an art discipline which stands for itself. In this context we want to present you two interesting photo exhibitions: One is called ‘No Photographing’ by Tim Rautert who was awarded the Lovis-Corinth-Award. The main samples of his work are open to be viewed by the public in the Art Forum of the East German Gallery until the 5th of October www.kog-regensburg.de. You yourself can judge how the perspectives of an experienced artist differ from the work of a young photographer if you also visit the photo exhibition of Stephanie Sabatier, exhibiting in the St. Joseph’s Caritas hospital. The female artist, who among others, studied in Gent (Belgium) and Prague (Czech Republic) is displaying her very personal view in photographs, which in contradiction to Rautert – are not snap-shots but composed pictures that almost seem staged. You can see this exhibition daily from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. until the 19th of October. More information at: www.caritasjosef.de

Last recommendation ...
Top range art treasures are usually preserved by Regensburg’s many church museums.
The Diocesan Museum of St. Ulrich, for example, has valuable sacral items, sculptures and paintings exhibited in its former church, which is adorned with impressive renaissance frescos.
Or, take an educational journey back in time and join a guided tour through the cathedral and the cathedral’s cloister with its All Hallow´s- and St. Stephen´s Chapel.
Book your ticket in the house at Domplatz Plaza No 5.
Are you searching for higher grounds? Save some time for climbing up the Tower of the Trinity’s Church (open daily during good weather). From here you have an amazing view over the picturesque roof scenery of Regensburg, and if you are lucky and the weather permits, you can even see as far as the surroundings of Regensburg. We would also like to recommend to you: Enjoy this view late at night.
