Regensburg in June

Thinking of Regensburg, one has the Stone Bridge, St. Peters Cathedral and the Thurn and Taxis Palace in mind. These are the architectural jems of Regensburg’s 2000 year old history. However, these sites and monuments alone would not have been merit enough for receiving the title of UNESCO World Heritage for Regensburg. Since July 2006, the old city has been on the World Heritage List besides Stadtamhof. Regensburg will be celebrating the World Heritage Day for the second time this year and wants to bring the UNESCO idea closer to its’ citizens and guests. The weekend of the 6th and 7th of June is completely under the motto Trade and Exchange. Enjoy a journey through history discovering the city.

Art
We recommend a visit to the Kunstkabinett in Untere Bachgasse for fans of the arts: To celebrate the gallery’s 30th anniversary, works by three giants of German contemporary art can be seen (Georg Baselitz, A.R. Penck, Markus Lüpertz). A show for which you would otherwise have to make a pilgrimage to Düsseldorf!

"Lust an der Malerei" ("The Joy of Painting") is the name of the current show at the Kunstforum Ostdeutsche Galerie, an exhibition of 60 paintings and 40 drawings in private ownership in Southern Germany by the “proletarian Rubens”, Paul Kleinschmidt (1883-1949), who depicted the female form monumentally and subtly, yet always with technical precision. The exhibition opens on June 20, and information and times can be found at www.kunstforum.net.

Music
In musical terms, there is again something for all tastes. Opera fans can enjoy a feast not only for the ears, but also for the eyes, with a successful production of Mozart’s, The Marriage of Figaro at the city theater. Dates: June 5th, 7th, 21st, at 7.30 pm. The musical My Fair Lady has also already become a classic, and will be entertaining fans of lighter music on June 19th (Premiere) and the 28th, also at the Stadttheater, and starting again at 7.30 pm. If you want to experience authentic contemporary folk music, try the 7th Oberpfälzer MundArt Festival in Stadtamhof. On June 6 and 7, there will be traditional Viennese music, dancing and acting in the Hauptstraße in Stadtamhof, and there will also be good Spitalbier available to drink!

A trip on the Danube accompanied by exhilarating South American rhythms is a special experience. The name of this splendid group is Quadrumana, who transfer this passionate, infectious music to the sunny South in just a few steps. Date: June 26th, at 7.30 pm, MS Regensburg. Boarding is at the Donaumarkt jetty. (www.jazzclub-regensburg.de)

Festival
The Regensburg Festival (Bürgerfest) – June 26th to 28th – takes place every second year and has been a great magnet for visitors of all ages from near and far for decades. Alongside international culinary delights, a multitude of activities and handicraft as well as countless spectacular special events provide visitors with a varied and top class cultural program. The whole old town area becomes a festival and banquet arena for a weekend. In its thirty-year history the Bürgerfest has seen a number of changes and alterations, but the original idea of discovering the old city center of Regensburg – now recognized as a UNESCO world heritage site – along with its character and flair, and spending a few enjoyable hours at the festival with happy people is more relevant today than ever. You have been warned! A never ending stream of people flows through the narrow streets, so claustrophobics should seek out the quieter areas at the edges of the district. Otherwise, the opportunities for communication are higher than ever.
