Regensburg in July an August

July is the peak month for Regensburg’s cultural events. The Bavarian Jazz Weekend draws both young and established jazzers onto the city’s streets and squares. Of course, the Thurn and Taxis Schlossfestspiele (concert and theatre festival) is another crowd magnet. Romance is to be found at the Palazzo Festival, while the Weltmusikfestival brings in an international feeling. So that you don’t lose orientation with all this variety, we’ve summarized this month’s highlights for you on page 29. Enjoy the cultural summer 2009!

 Cathedral Illuminated
Along with the Stone Bridge, the gothic cathedral is the most visited historical site in Regensburg. Around 10.15 p.m. on July 3, 4, 18, 31 and August 1, a multimedia tour with illumination and music will be presented. Taking after the example of the French Son et Lumière, the birth and existence of the cathedral, from its origin to the present, will help audiences to gain a better understanding of its history.

Music
The Bavarian Jazz Weekend (July 9 to 12) in Regensburg can not be compared with the international Jazz Week in Burghausen, the Jazzfestival Zoppot (Poland) or the Montreux Jazz Festival. It all started with 85 Jazz formations performing free concerts for guests and locals of the city on two days in the summer and was initially meant to bring liveliness to the historic old city.
Those who like early music, will love Stimmercktage. A vocal ensemble, with the same name, is holding concerts in mid-August (August 7 to 9, 8 p.m. and 5 p.m. respectively), including works by largely unknown renaissance or baroque composers, scientific introductions and discussions after the performances. These serve to deepen insight into this musical tradition. Over and above that, the concerts take place in the gothic church on the Adlersberg Estate – once a Dominican convent – allowing visitors ample opportunity to enjoy drinking beer in the cozy beer garden. www.stimmwercktage.de
Another special point of focus is the serenade in the ancient former Minorite Cloister (today Historical Museum): on July 2, at 8 p.m., the Boulanger Trio will give a performance with works by Gabriel Fauré, Lili Boulanger and Johannes Brahms. Likewise, on 9 July at 8 p.m. virtuoso solo cantatas by George Frideric Handel will be performed.

Theater
The farce No Sex Please, We’re British by Anthony Marriott and Alistair Foote, will be performed, in the original language version, by the Regensburg University Players (RUPs). Shows are daily from July 3 to 18, at 7:30 p.m. at the University Theater. A banker lives happily and contentedly with his freshly wedded wife. One day, she has exclusive Swedish glassware delivered by mail. With the the never-ending stream of packages which follow, pornographic magazines, films and sex toys somehow find their way into the household, along with advertisements for hot young lively Scandinavian ladies. This wouldn’t all be so tragic, if the bank director and his superior, the stern bank inspector, a police superintendent and the young banker’s mother had not also placed advertisements… www.rups.info
For opera lovers, the classical theater on Bismarck Plaza is standing by with Mozart’s opera classic, Le Nozze di Figaro on July 2, 8, 11 and 21, at 7:30 p.m. This production is definitely worth seeing and hearing. It is far removed from the often stiff and daft opera style, but instead, captivates the audience with vitality and enthusiasm.

Art
This summer, the exhibition room Erdel atFisch Market 3, stands out beside the numerous small galleries and big museums of the city , with the exhibition 400 lunas emocianadas. In alignment with the international year of astronomy, Juan Fernando de La Iglesia from Galicia, has engaged himself artistically with the astronomer Johannes Kepler.
